About Us
Open Ground Dorset was created to offer something different. We combine outdoor learning, mentoring, practical skills and therapeutic support to help young people and families reconnect, regulate and rebuild confidence — away from clinical environments and pressure-heavy systems.
We are a small family-run team with lived experience. We understand the challenges people face, and we believe meaningful growth happens through flexibility, genuine connection and supportive environments.
Our work takes place across the Dorset countryside, in woodlands, workshops and open outdoor spaces that give people room to breathe, learn and grow at their own pace.

The Dorset countryside — where our work takes place
Our Philosophy
A place to slow down.
A place to reconnect.
A place to learn.
A place to grow.
Why the Outdoors
From nature, from each other, and sometimes from themselves. We're seeing a growing number of families wanting to spend more time outdoors, learn practical skills and create lasting memories together — yet many lack the confidence, knowledge or opportunities to take that first step.
At Open Ground, we believe the outdoors offers something powerful:
From camping and campfire cooking to bushcraft, outdoor adventures and practical country living skills, we help people develop the confidence to explore, learn and thrive outdoors.
Knowledge Creates Confidence
Whether it's learning how to safely build a campfire, pitch a tent, cook outdoors, navigate woodland trails, maintain equipment or simply feel comfortable spending time in nature — we believe these skills matter.
Investing time in learning practical outdoor skills creates confidence, independence, resilience and stronger family connections that extend far beyond the woods.
Because the greatest adventures aren't about having all the answers. They're about having the confidence to begin.
Our Approach
We bring hands-on practical skills — bushcraft, mechanics, outdoor cooking — alongside mentoring and therapeutic support. The outdoors is the setting, but the real work is human connection.
No rigid programmes. We shape each session around the individual or family, adapting to their needs, interests and pace — whether that is a single family reset day or long-term mentoring.
We work with schools, local authorities, alternative provisions and family support teams, as well as directly with parents and individuals looking for something grounded and different.
We use a network of woodland, workshop and outdoor venues across Dorset, with flexible locations to suit each person, family or organisation we work with.
What we offer
Personalised outdoor mentoring for young people, combining practical activities with emotional support and confidence building.
Opportunities for families to slow down, reconnect and enjoy positive shared experiences in a grounded outdoor setting.
Motorbike mechanics, bushcraft, fire skills and outdoor cooking — hands-on experiences that build real confidence and capability.
Qualified counselling support available alongside mentoring where appropriate, for parents or young people.
Whether you're a professional looking to refer a young person, or a parent looking for something different — we're here to listen.
